Protests break out in Beletweyne amid deployment of federal troops

Hundreds of residents in Beletweyne town have held demonstrations against newly formed Hirshabeelle administration and deployment of federal and state forces in a village on outskirt of the town amid an ongoing tension in the region.

The protests broke out Saturday as troops and police surrounded Elgal village which has for over a week now been the epicenter of a resistance movement against the newly elected administration in HirShabelle State.

Sources in Beletweyne told HOL the security forces were deployed Saturday.

The developments come following reports the Federal Government had issued an arrest warrant against a faction leader Abukar Haji Warsame.

A group calling itself Hiiraan Rescue Council headed by Warsame emerged about two weeks ago protesting the election of Ali Guudlaawe as president of HirShabelle State.

According to the group, the presidency, based on previous clan agreements was to come from Hiiraan region but that pact was violated when Guudlaawe who allegedly backed by the federal government was elected to the post
